Sore Tummies and the Unexpected

The text came while I was in the middle of my daughter’s cheer practice. As the coach, I know I’m not supposed to be taking calls, but my husband doesn’t usually contact me during practice, so I knew something was up.
T just threw up. He’s lying on the floor with a throw up bowl. I’ll keep you posted
Great. It’s competition weekend, what our squad works towards all season…the big performance is two days away, and now I’ve got a sick 8-year old, being tended to by my sick husband.
Unexpected. Oh yes. Unfortunate, definitely. But insurmountable, not at all.
There was a time when interruptions in the Perfect Life Script in my head would set me off. Things like sick kids or lonely friends or marriages imploding or misplacing gift cards would rattle me. On my worst days, the unexpected still does.
But I’ve come to see that the interruptions, the inconveniences of life which accompany real relationships are the things that make me alive. It is part of loving and being loved by messy humans. The unexpected is well, expected.
It is in those unscripted moments that I whisper, “Jesus, what do say to them?” or “Lord, how do I comfort him?” and life goes on as He shows up in my everyday.
So the cheer competition will go on, my little sore-tummy shortie will get better and I’ll throw that Perfect Life Script away. Again.
I expect I’ll be tossing it away my whole life.
